Worship NOW! | Joy "Un-Bridled"

As we prepare for this year’s Resurrection Sunday celebrations, it struck me that the events of this season are a series of headshaking “uns.”  Let me explain what dawned on me by walking you through what happened 2,000 years ago and show you those “uns” and why we are still shaking our heads with un-bridled joy at the events that make up this Resurrection season.

Let’s start with Jesus entering Jerusalem to the crowd’s un-restrained cries of Hosanna! The Messiah, our Savior is un-ceremoniously riding not in a fancy golden gilt chariot, not on a majestic steed with a red-plumed headdress, but instead, he arrives in a manner so un-worthy of his majesty, so un-thinkably crass, upon some old coats tossed over a lowly donkey.

Then we have the Last Supper where only Jesus knows Judas is un-faithful and has already betrayed him to the authorities. The other eleven are un-aware of what is about to happen and certainly un-clear about the meaning of the very un-usual language Jesus uses when he says “Take and eat; this is my body, take this and drink; this is my blood, poured out for the forgiveness of sins. I will not drink from this fruit of the vine until I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.”

Next, the garden of Gethsemane where Jesus takes some disciples and tells them to wait and watch while he goes off un-attended to pray. He returns to them three times to find he has been un-supported because each time they have fallen asleep on him.

The week that started with all the triumphant acclamations for Jesus from the gathered crowd, ends with Jesus alone in an un-expected arrest, an un-just trial, a torturous, un-bearable beating, an un-fair choice of prisoner released, and ultimately the most painful, un-dignified, un-clothed (they cast lots for his loincloth), and un-imaginable death of our Savior, Jesus.

And if that were the end, we’d all be lost; un-done forever. But three days later, the women, some un-named so they remain un-acknowledged by history, thus confirming they were un-important and of no stature in those days, they begin the walk to do the un-thinkable – embalming the dead body of their beloved.

Arriving at the tomb they find the un-expected; the tomb is un-sealed, the stone has been rolled away, and the body is gone!! Imagine the un-comprehensible un-certainty that swirled in their minds at these un-fathomable findings. Add to that the fear from the sudden light of the two un-earthly angelic beings who begin speaking to them un-believable news – HE IS NOT HERE; HE HAS RISEN FROM THE DEAD!

They hardly grasp what they’ve just seen and heard, they've had no time to confront their un-belief about what they’ve just been told, when the angels tell them that the most un-expected, un-merited task God could ever give a person is being entrusted to them; a task that will change the entire world and the trajectory of human life: Go tell the his disciples he has risen from the dead. They, not the eleven disciples, are given the un-deniable honor to be the first evangelists, the first ones given the un-paralleled assignment to bring the un-fathomable news that salvation has come to the world; the un-equivocal good news that all Jesus said is true, that he IS the long awaited Messiah and all that he did now allows us the opportunity to be heirs of the Kingdom of God, his very own children who will spend eternity with him.

All of these un-deserved truths still make me shake my head, not in un-belief, but in true knowledge of how un-deserving I am of such a great love and the true gift of Jesus’ Resurrection.

These are the "uns" I'll be thinking about as I prepare for this Holy season and worship Our One and Only True God. I hope you will too.

May God bless you abundantly this season.
