A HOLY WEEK DEVO: CHRIST SPEAKS FROM THE CROSS
Jesus also says to John “Behold your mother”. Here Jesus is directing John, His beloved Apostle to take care of His mother, Mary. Jesus entrusts the care of Mary to him, she then lives with John from that hour. John accepts Mary as his mother.
Jesus directs his mother, Mary to accept John as her son. Jesus is putting Mary in the care of one who believes in Him as God. John is faithfully at the foot of the Cross with Mary, Mary the wife Cleopas, who is also the sister of Mary the mother of Jesus. Also mentioned by John is Mary Magdalene.
We see the love of Jesus for His mother. He is providing for her by forging this mother/son relationship with John, His beloved apostle. In so doing, He is providing peace and comfort to both Mary and John. both love Him, and are suffering as they watch Him on the Cross.
They are now together in Christ. I feel that this is an example of brotherly love that Christ has given to us, the Body of Christ with Christ as the Head. From the Cross, we are shown that as believers in Christ we are to care for one another, we do not walk alone. This is a representation of the greatest commandment we are given: to love God above all else, and to love our neighbor as ourselves.
